SQL Database vs SQL Managed Instance

  • SQL Database (Single/elastic pool) will be created in New Virtual Network maintained by Azure. Managed SQL Instance can be created in your Virtual Network in any subnet.
  • SQL Managed Instance supports SQL Server Addons SSIS, SSRS.
  • SQL Managed Instance is widely used for migrations i.e. migrating onpremise SQL server to Azure.

  • Geo-Replication:

    • Multi Region Deployments
    • Sync Database for Business Analytics
    • For Disaster Recovery.
  • Create a Azure SQL Single Database in Central US and then apply the Geo-Replication to West-US.
