Scenario: John wants to setup monitoring on applications & Infrastructure

  • The application architecture which John wants to monitor looks as Preview

  • John has to setup monitoring and also deploy the above architecture on various environments

    • Dev
    • QA
    • UAT
    • Prod
  • John has two challenges

    1. How to create the environment with maximum reusability
    2. Setting up monitoring
  • Lets solve first challenge:

    • Option 1: Create manually using Console:
      • Easier approach but zero reusability
    • Option 2: Write a shell script using aws cli
      • Decent option but changes are difficult to handle
      • If changes happen in the environment it will be difficult for the script to identify.
    • Option 3: Write AWS Infrastructure as Code Template (Cloudformation)
      • It ensures the state is maintained

  • After you have finished using delete the stack

  • As wordpress has some quickly created lampstack the output section and the webpage are as shown below Preview Preview Preview

  • Now if john creates something like this for the application architecture mentioned above, it would save lot of time.

  • To do this John needs to know Cloudformation.

What is AWS Cloudformation

  • Is a service of AWS that helps you model and setup AWS resources.
  • This is Infrastructure as a Code model supported by AWS
  • We describe our architecture in the form of template. Cloud formation template can be a Json/YAML file and it has specific grammar.
