EBS Volume Types

  • EBS provides the following volume types
    • Solid State Drives (SSD)
      • Categories
        • General Purpose SSD: Provides a balance of price and performance
          • Volume Types:
            • gp2:
              • Max Throughput per volume: 250 MiB/s
            • gp3:
              • Max Throughput per volume: 1000 MiB/s
          • Durability: 99.8%-99.9% (0.1 – 0.2% of annual failure rate)
          • Use cases:
            • Low-latency interactive apps
            • Development and Test Environments
          • Volume Size: 1 GiB – 16 TiB
          • Max IOPS per volume: 16,000
        • Provisioned IOPS SSD: Provides high performance for mission-critical, low-latency or high throughput workloads
          • Volume Types:
            • io1:
              • Durability: 99.8%-99.9% (0.1 – 0.2% of annual failure rate)
              • Usecases:
                • Workloads that require sustained IOPS performance or more than 16,000 IOPS
                • I/O-intensive Database Workload
              • Volume Size: 4 GiB – 16 TiB
              • Max IOPS per volume: 64,000
              • Max Throughput per volume: 1000 MiB/s
            • io2:
              • Durability: 99.999% (0.001 of annual failure rate)
              • Usecases:
                • Workloads that require sustained IOPS performance or more than 16,000 IOPS
                • I/O-intensive Database Workload
              • Volume Size: 4 GiB – 16 TiB
              • Max IOPS per volume: 64,000
              • Max Throughput per volume: 1000 MiB/s
            • io2 Block Express:
              • Durability: 99.999% (0.001 of annual failure rate)
              • Usecases:
                • Workloads that require
                  • Sub-millisecond latency
                  • Sustained IOPS performance
                  • More than 64000 IOPS or 1000 MiB/s Throughput
              • Volume Size: 4 GiB – 64 TiB
              • Max IOPS per volume: 2,56,000
              • Max Throughput per volume: 4000 MiB/s
    • Hard disk Drives (HDDs)
      • Throughput Optimize HDD:
        • This is a low-cost HDD designed for frequently accessed, throughput-intensive workloads
        • Volume Type: st1
        • Durability: 99.8%-99.9% (0.1 – 0.2% of annual failure rate)
        • Use cases:
          • Big Data
          • Data Warehouses
          • Log Processing
        • Volume Size: 125 GiB – 16 TiB
        • Max IOPS per volume: 500
        • Max Throughput per volume: 500 MiB/s
      • Cold HDD:
        • The lowest cost HDD designed for less frequently accessed workloads
        • Volume Type: sc1
        • Durability: 99.8%-99.9% (0.1 – 0.2% of annual failure rate)
        • Use cases:
          • Scenarios where lowest storage cost is important
          • infrequently accessed data
        • Volume Size: 125 GiB – 16 TiB
        • Max IOPS per volume: 250
        • Max Throughput per volume: 250 MiB/s
    • Previous generation:
      • Magnetic disk:
        • volume size: 1GiB – 1 TiB
        • Max IOPS => 40-200
        • Max Througput => 40-90 MiB/s
