Kubernetes: bring-up clsuter options:

  1. Local/Desktop: (devloper env)

Windows:

  1. enable wsl2
  2. Docker
  3. kind
  4. kubectl cli
  5. rancher desktop
  6. podman
wsl --install

wsl --status

Install docker desktop

install docker Desktop

choco install docker-desktop -y 

Install Kind

choco install kind -y or winget install kubernetes.kind

Kubectl cli

choco install kubernetes-cli -y

Deploy sample pod

apiVersion: v1
kind: Pod
metadata:
  name: nginx
spec:
  containers:
  - name: nginx
    image: nginx:1.14.2
    ports:
    - containerPort: 80

`kubectl apply -f sample.yaml

kubectl get pods

to access from local host

kubectl port-forward <resource-type>/<resource-name> [local-port]:<remote-pod-port>
kubectl port-forward pod/nginx 80:80

steps to setup kind in ubuntu

# Download the official installation script
curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh

# Run the script with root privileges to complete the installation
sudo sh get-docker.sh

# For AMD64 / x86_64 systems (Standard Intel/AMD computers)
[ $(uname -m) = x86_64 ] && curl -Lo ./kind https://k8s.io

# For ARM64 systems (e.g., Ubuntu on Raspberry Pi or ARM cloud instances)
[ $(uname -m) = aarch64 ] && curl -Lo ./kind https://k8s.io

# Make the file executable
chmod +x ./kind

# Move it into your system PATH
sudo mv ./kind /usr/local/bin/kind


sudo snap install kubectl --classic

# Check kind version
kind version

# Spin up a local Kubernetes cluster
kind create cluster

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl gnupg

# 2. Download the public signing key for the Kubernetes package repositories

sudo chmod 644 /etc/apt/keyrings/kubernetes-apt-keyring.gpg

# 3. Add the appropriate Kubernetes apt repository
echo 'deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/kubernetes-apt-keyring.gpg] https://k8s.io /' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.p/kubernetes.list
sudo chmod 644 /etc/apt/sources.list.p/kubernetes.list

# 4. Update apt package index and install kubectl
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y kubectl
